Offer one stick at a time and stay in the room. Keep water nearby, because hard cheese makes dogs thirsty.

Suitable from four months, once the adult teeth are through, and best suited to larger dogs. Take the stick away once it is small enough to swallow whole.

Two or three sessions a week suits most dogs. These are large and calorie dense, so count them in the day's food rather than on top of it, and cut the meal back a little on chew days.

A big dog working hard at a large stick will get through more than you expect in one sitting. It is fine to take it away partway through and give it back another day.

Do not bin the last piece of a stick.

Soak it in water for about thirty seconds, microwave it for forty-five, and the moisture inside expands into a light crunchy puff. Let it cool completely before serving, it comes out hot.

The stubs off a 5 oz or 6 oz are bigger than most, so you get a decent puff out of them rather than a mouthful.

Store in a cool, dry place. No refrigeration, and no need to reseal the bag.

Let a stick dry out fully between sessions before putting it back.

Take the chew away once it is small enough to swallow whole. A large dog can get a bigger piece into its mouth than you might think, so do not leave the last portion with them.

Give each dog their own stick and separate them while they chew. Guarding a high value chew is common even in dogs who normally share everything.

This is a hard chew, so it is not right for dogs with dental disease, existing fractures or crowns. Unlike bone or antler it softens as saliva works into it, and it does not splinter. If your dog has had dental problems, ask your vet first.
